Bactron Anaerobic/Environmental Systems
Bactron Anaerobic Chamber – Superb visibility, gloveless dexterity, ergonomic convenience improve anaerobic handling productivity. Learn all about the Bactron III Anaerobic Chamber with our interactive video.
Anaerobes are organisms that can grow without oxygen. Some can live with oxygen when it is present (facultative) and some cannot tolerate even a trace of oxygen (strict or obligatory). They are very prevalent, many as part of the normal human flora, and those which make up an estimated 50% of the earth's biota. Dozens of common infections are either exclusively anaerobic or mixed aerobic/anaerobic. Some obligatory anaerobes cause serious infections such as tetanus and gas gangrene or botulism in canned foods. Therefore, isolation and identification of anaerobes are very important in clinical diagnosis, research, and in commercial processes such as canning and fermentation.
Sheldon Manufacturing Inc. is a major manufacturer of constant temperature laboratory equipment. Expertise in manufacturing efficiency and quality standards automatically bring to the Bactron systems high laboratory standards of precision and reliability.
Patented Bactron™ anaerobic/environmental systems allow efficient and dexterous glove–free handling and inspection of samples. Unique module systems insure completion of procedures from unpackaging of material to inoculation, incubation, inspection and recovery without a single exposure to oxygen.
A selection of Bactron models lets you choose the capacity you need, all offering substantial cost savings over disposable handling. Bactron systems pay for themselves quickly and improve the quality and reliability of your laboratory results.
Bactron systems have air tight construction of stainless steel and rigid Plexiglas for unobstructed vision and integrity. A white powder coated paint interior is easy to clean and maximizes visibility.
Greater Efficiency for a Variety of Applications
Research and clinical laboratories handling even small volumes of anaerobic procedures save substantial amounts of money by using permanent systems rather than disposable pouches and jars. Anaerobic systems offered by Shel Lab match chamber size to need. Productivity is further improved by an up to 50% reduction in turn around time.
A patented feature of Bactron anaerobic chambers is a special cuff which permits the technician to work barehanded inside the chamber without compromising the oxygen–free atmosphere. Unencumbered tactile and dexterous handling is more efficient and productive. Separate sleeves can be purchased for each user for hygiene and correct fit.
The Bactron system makes work procedures easy. The air lock module automatically exchanges room air for Anaerobic Mixed Gas making sample handling easy.
1. Load the samples of materials into the air lock through the outer air lock door from inside.
2. Activate the automatic air lock switch and place arms in sleeves. Perform sleeve evacuation procedure using foot pedals.
3. Open arm port doors and insert arms into chamber, storing doors in convenient holders inside working chamber.
4. Perform procedures, load or unload incubator.
5. Pick up the arm port doors when exiting the chamber. Cover ports and seal before removing arms from sleeves. That's all there is to complete anaerobic integrity.
Unique Features of the Bactron Anaerobic Chamber
Comfortable sleeve cuffs seal around the operator's arms permitting barehanded manipulation of plates and specimens inside the working chamber. Elimination of bulky gloves and makes work more comfortable and efficient. Latex gloves may be worn if desired.
Convenient foot pedals are used by operator to evacuate the sleeves before entering the working chamber.
Sealed doors are removed when entering the working anaerobic chamber. They are kept on holders inside the chamber while user's arms are inserted in sleeves. Operator replaces and seals doors when leaving the chamber, thus closing the system and maintaining a strict anaerobic environment.
A shelf inside the air lock module slides into the chamber making loading of materials and samples easy.
Each Bactron anaerobic chamber is equipped to operate as either a one or two gas system. You can use Anaerobic Mixed Gas (AMG) of 5% Carbon Dioxide, 5% Hydrogen and 90% Nitrogen or you have the flexibility of using one tank of AMG and a second tank of Nitrogen. If you are a high volume user, two gas operation will be found more economical. Gas consumption depends on frequency of air lock usage, entries and exits from the chamber and user technique. Typically, one tank (200 cu. ft.) will las 24 – 28 days.
Electronic controls operate a programmed sequence to provide desired atmosphere. Air lock can be operated both automatically and manually. Gauges and visual indicators show pressure, temperature and status of cycle.
The anaerobic chamber atmosphere circulates through condensate controller then through a catalyst which removes any trace amounts of oxygen. High relative humidity is maintained while condensate moisture is removed without use of unnecessary desiccants which can dehydrate media and samples.
Chamber is equipped with automatic pressure control (manometer) providing positive pressure at approximately 0.25' water and giving quick visual check of pressure level.
In the Bactron IV incubator a convenient revolving shelf makes efficient use of space. Incubator in models I, II, and III are inside chamber at top rear maximizing working space.
A microscope adapter is an optional accessory for every Bactron Chamber. The adapter slides from side to side so that a microscope can be positioned anywhere for close inspection of samples through the working chamber wall. (Microscope sold separately)
Integral vacuum pump provides rapid evacuation of air from the air lock module for replacement by inert gas mixture. Pump and gas regulator are standard equipment.
A lighting fixture which illuminates the interior through the ceiling of the chamber is available on some Bactron models.
Each purchase of a Bactron system in USA or Canada includes operator training in anaerobic bacteriology and use of the system.

A System to Match Your Requirements
14 cu. ft. workspace, 100 plate capacity incubator 'Bactron I' is an ideal first anaerobic chamber. Specifically designed for use by smaller laboratories, it can also serve as an economical set–up station for larger labs. All the quality features of other Bactron models are standard (excluding sliding air lock shelf).
Compact, economical Bactron II anaerobic environment system with air lock, workspace and a 200 plate capacity incubator delivers optimum productivity in a compact space. The operator has total command of the work area, yet enjoys ample bench space for efficient performance of all procedures requiring an anaerobic atmosphere.
The Bactron III is the newest model to join our Bactron Family. It offers all of the high–value features and essential benefits of the Bactron line. The 300 plate capacity designated incubator makes it easy to store a large number of plates, while the small chamber footprint (12 cu. ft.) saves valuable laboratory space.
17 cu. ft. workspace, 600 plate capacity incubator. The Bactron IV system permits volume handling of anaerobic cultures with a maximum of operator comfort. It is the largest capacity, most complete anaerobic environmental system available. It is designed for high volume, yet requires far less bench space than expected for its capacity and performance features.
17 cu. ft. workspace, 600 plate capacity incubator. The Bactron IV–900 system boasts the same specifications of the Bactron IV, except with the addition of a rear wall incubator. With capacity of 900 plates this unit will suffice for even the busiest lab.
17 cu. ft. workspace. This chamber is designed to provide a large workspace and gloveless dexterity in closed environment industrial, research and development, quality control packaging applications. Atmospheres of nitrogen, CO2, or any other inert gas are possible. All of the other features of construction, glove–less handling and integrity of other Bactron models are provided (excluding incubator, loop sterilizer and petri plate rack.)
